June: a fateful month for France

The month of June 1940 changed France in ways almost as drastic as the Revolution of 1789. The German tank blitzkreig swept over the French border country and Paris fell on June 10 and a week later General Charles de Gaulle flies to Paris in a plane furnished him by Winston Churchill. De Gaulle will issue his famous “Appeal of June 18” for French sailors and soldiers to make their way to London and join him to carry on the fight against Hitler’s Germany.
